The one word that describes what I felt when I saw the latest W cover.
And I'm NOT saying that because Brad Pitt's on the cover, I'm saying that because the PHOTOGRAPH is stunning!!
I LOVE the idea behind the photo....instead of trying to "mask" someone by applying makeup, and photoshop, great clothes, flattering lighting, etc etc. how about photograph them in a totally raw, unmasked fashion?
You can't tell from the photo I've posted above but every pore, acne scar, wrinkle, and imperfection in BP's face is VERY apparent in this series of photographs. On the cover shot, the depth of field is SO shallow that even Brad's nose is blurry. But his undereye wrinkles, eyes, and pores on his face are TACK sharp. It is SO beautiful in it's simplicity. And shows that a lovely face, looks lovely even in it's imperfection. The photo says so much (to me at least). It's not the type of photo that says "I'm hot." It says "I've lived."
In the editors letter Julie Belcove describes that when Brad was approached about being photographed for the magazine he insisted that the only artist for the job was Chuck Close. The photograph was a daguerreotype (which I know little about) which is a method of making photographs that dates back to the 19th century.
I love all the inside details the magazine has about the photoshoot. If you don't know W magazine, then you need to know that it is a large publication...13x10 to be exact...so when you see the Pitt cover, it pops out at you.
Has anyone see the new W? Did you love or hate the photograph?
My husband didn't like it. He thought it was very unflattering.
But that's exactly why I loved it!
